What is BJJ? Who should train BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an evolved form of the traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ allows smaller opponents to use leverage and body position to set up escapes, submissions (joint locks, chokes, etc.), and striking.

It is an exceptionally practical martial art for anyone to train:

  • Often when in a combat situation, confrontations end up ‘going to the ground’. It is at this point the person that is versed in BJJ has the advantage.
  • BJJ is ideal for women. Unfortunately, 1 in 3 women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Training for BJJ is primarily done on the ground, making those who train extremely adept at escapes and submissions from your back or other dominated positions on the ground.
  • BJJ is an excellent martial art for kids. Besides teaching self defense tactics, BJJ teaches discipline and improves health and wellness.
  • BJJ is a great workout. Training and ‘rolling’ with other BJJ practitioners is one of the best full body work outs that can be done. BJJ improves cardio, strength, conditioning and flexibility.
